85-year-old doorman continues to greet travelers

Spokane, Wash. -- In the doorway of the historic Davenport Hotel stands an old friend, a familiar face welcoming travelers with the tip of his hat.

"I get complimented on that all the time and the red coat", said doorman John Reed.

Whether they're coming or going, visitors expect to see Reed out front. After all, he's stood by the grand hotel for almost sixty years. Fifty-eight to be exact.

"On my days off people ask where am I at and it makes me feel good," said Reed.

Reed started at the hotel as a busboy, then bellman. But, years ago when the Davenport started to show its age, his job was put in jeopardy.
