The wheels of progress are picking up speed and we're all just hitting our stride. Bloomsday and the
Lilac Festival were, once again, great events. Hoopfest
is on the way. All of our local annual traditions form a foundation that is a terrific backdrop for everything else going on in the region. Here's a quick recap of several important events and developments many of us have recently shared.
We've just finished hosting a group of eight travel writers who were in Spokane for the annual Pacific Northwest Travel Writers Conference. Our familiarization tour for the group was an unqualified success thanks to the hard work of our staff, and the crucial participation of so many of our members. From river rafting, to a charcuterie workshop, to fabulous meals at local restaurants, this was our region's chance to shine and it did!
One of the highlights of the writers' visit was showing off the beautiful new City Hall Plaza and Huntington Park. I was honored to serve as emcee for the dedication ceremony which was attended by hundreds of people. Avista is to be deeply thanked for its work to make the new park a key destination for visitors and locals.
Speaking of work, the work on the Spokane Convention Center expansion and the new Grand Hotel Spokane is moving with lightning speed, and it's getting the attention of a lot of key people. We've hosted site visits already for meeting planners who are very interested in these new assets. Among the site visits, we just hosted some planners who are looking at 2020. The future is getting here fast!
Our annual Inland Northwest Tourism Awards ceremony was, again, a great event that highlighted the invaluable contribution made by so many individuals in the hospitality industry. The setting at the Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox couldn't have been better, and we want to thank everyone who turned out to make this such a grand event.
Summer is a great time to show off the city and the region. Take in a Broadway show -- Wicked was just here and The Book of Mormon is on the way.
Northern Quest Resort & Casino's outdoor summer concert series is back. The Rotary Fountain in Riverfront Park
is going full-speed. I could go on and on. Instead of talk...do! And enjoy!
