It's that time of year when the daylight is beginning to last longer and we get a hint that spring is just around the corner - do you feel the energy from the coming of spring? Here at Visit Spokane we do! We are also creating energy and drawing attention to Spokane and I thought you'd like a quick update on some of our new initiatives launching in the coming weeks.
Of course the
Spokane Convention Center
expansion and new hotel development are key opportunities to promote "what's new" to meeting and event planners. We're exhibiting at more trade shows, conducting more sales missions and advertising in more meetings trade publications than ever before. We have expanded our marketing and sales efforts to gain national attention that will help meeting planners and leisure travelers become aware of Spokane. We will have advertising placements in the Wall Street Journal travel insert, in Times Square (New York) as part of the Good Morning America electronic billboard programming and in the Toronto Star, USA Today Travel Guide and the Food & Travel Magazine. And for those of you who
expressed that you missed our television advertising last year we are introducing a bigger campaign this year which includes television to reach the Canadian and Central Washington markets.
Leveraging resources, building a great impact together and catching the attention of an expanded audience is even stronger with your participation. What are your marketing initiatives? Can Visit Spokane help? Keep us in the loop about what is new, where you are advertising, key audiences you'd like to reach and opportunities that you'd like to explore with us. Let's sustain the positive energy about Spokane and capture more visitors, meetings and visitor spending!

WA Legislature Passes Tourism Bill
Last week, the Washington State Senate passed Substitute House Bill 2229 to support study of long-term tourism funding legislation in the next session. The bill, which has been vigorously promoted by the Washington Tourism Alliance
(WTA) and the statewide tourism industry, now goes to Governor Jay Inslee for signature. If signed by the governor, which is expected, the bill will recognize a structure, level of funding and governance for a private, non-profit marketing program for the state. The bill also directs state agencies to work with the WTA to create a collection methodology for long-term tourism marketing funds. To learn more about WTA, click here.
Visit Spokane, Real Time Concierge
Visit Spokane was recently named in Skift's article, "The 11 Tourism Boards That Use Twitter Like a Real-Time Concierge
." The study looked at destination marketing organizations' (DMO) response time, tweets per day, ratio of tweets to replies and amount of followers on Twitter. Visit Spokane was the only destination of our size to be on the list and averaged a response time of less than two hours.
"It's great to have our social media efforts recognized and to be in the company of some really impressive DMOs like Explore Georgia, Visit Seattle and Visit Melbourne," said Peyton Scheller, Communications Coordinator at Visit Spokane. "Ultimately, that's the main purpose of
our Twitter account - to serve as a resource for people visiting Spokane. If we're not responding to questions and promoting what's happening in Spokane, then we're not doing our job. To me, this is validation for our efforts."

Did You Know?
Did you know Visit Spokane is working on a re-skin of our website? Learn about the details of the project from Design Director Jeremy Armes and Content Manager Mark Baker:
Can you give us the scoop on what the new design will look like?
We're working on a more visual design, with images laid out in a simple, grid-like format. We want our content to be as easy to use as possible for people who visit our site and have been keeping that in mind as we re-work the website.
Will there be new content on the website?
Oh, definitely. We are trying to move away from the listing format that exists on our website now and have more editorial content to provide visitors with the truest representation of what our region has to offer. So, if someone searches "Things to Do in Spokane" they will get more than just a list of businesses. They'll also be able to read about how to experience our region, which is much more enticing.
What does the new design mean for members?
Members will have more control of their listings and can add photos, videos, their own editorial content and more. The quality of content for member listings will be greatly enhanced, especially if the member takes advantage of being able to edit their own listing.
When will the new design be finished?
We are hoping to launch the new design by the end of March. Of course, building out content will always be a work in progress, as our region is always growing and expanding!
