Media Alert: Tourism Business Won't Stop in Spokane Region

The Business of Tourism Continues at the Spokane Regional CVB
State Tourism Office Closure won't deter the mission of the CVB

(Spokane, WA, June 28, 2011)- Funding for the Washington State Tourism office will end June 30, but the Spokane Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau remains open and will continue striving to increase economic development through the business of tourism. In Spokane County alone, tourism accounts for $741 million in visitor spending, employs nearly 10,000 people and creates $315 in annual per household tax relief.  The Spokane Regional CVB is not funded with monies from the state Tourism Office.  In fact, the CVB is funded with dedicated lodging taxes, the Tourism Promotion Area (TPA) business improvement district and private membership investments.

While the CVB is not funded by the state, what the state does to promote tourism nationally and internationally still matters to the Spokane region. CVB President and CEO Cheryl Kilday says, "It makes it harder to promote Spokane as a travel destination, if there is not a strong voice first building interest in Washington."  A transitional non-profit, state-wide organization has been established to continue marketing Washington beginning July 1. The Washington Tourism Alliance (WTA) will maintain the state's website and continue to have current tourism marketing materials available until a long range plan can be put in place. Hopefully, this will keep Washington competitive as families and businesses plan their next trip or company meeting.

The Spokane Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) is a non-profit 501(c)(6) organization which was developed in 1976 to create economic growth for Spokane County by marketing the region as a top-of-mind convention and visitor destination. Today, 25 CVB employees work in all facets of sales, marketing, group coordination and public relations.
