Cheryl-July-2015-HeadshotPresident's Perspective

As we head into the fall season, we encourage you to mark your calendar for our Annual Meeting taking place October 28 from 2:30-5:30pm (notice the new format and time!).  The Annual Meeting is our opportunity to share with you our program highlights, successes from the previous year and the outlook for the upcoming year. We also have a great speaker, Gilad Berenstein, who will share how artificial intelligence can be applied in technology to help us better connect with and serve our customers.

This year has brought a lot of exciting developments to the Spokane region: the Spokane Convention Center expansion, The Davenport Grand Hotel, the opening of the Appleway Trail in Spokane Valley, continuing growth within our culinary scene, the Washington State Chinese Lantern Festival, the 20th anniversary of the Spokane Arena and more. We are looking forward to the $64 million renovation of Riverfront Park and new strategies designed to continue to make our region a preferred destination for visitors.

This year, we will introduce a new awards program into the Annual Meeting. The specifics will be released in a couple of weeks so watch for further details.  We will recognize an individual, an event and a business/organization doing great work in the hospitality industry. So, be thinking about who you believe should be recognized so that you can send in your nomination once they are made available.

Mark your calendars for October 28 from 2:30 - 5:30 pm, watch for the details about the awards, and get ready to celebrate our tourism industry during the Annual Meeting.

SasquantestSasquan Recap

Sasquan was a hugely successful event!  With more than 5,000 attendees (making it one of the most successful Worldcons and the largest conference to ever be held in Spokane), the conference largely covered the Spokane region with more than 7,200 room nights.  Spokane broke the record in the number of memberships sold for Worldcon at 11,149.  This number contributed to Sasquan being the biggest Worldcon ever in terms of total members, surpassing last year's Loncon.  With 450 panelists (including David Gerrold and George R.R. Martin!), numerous events and the Hugo Awards, this conference had something for everyone. Thank you to everyone who helped make hosting this conference in Spokane a success!

pav-and-pagodaWashington State Chinese Lantern Festival

The first-ever Washington State Chinese Lantern Festival will take place in Riverfront Park, September 26 - November 1. Tickets are now on sale for the event, and hotel packages are available. While the lanterns are spectacular on their own, there will also be cultural performances, culinary experiences, historical displays and more. Please visit the website and share with your employees, friends and family.

Where in the World

Regional Director of National Accounts Ann Garvey traveled to Detroit, August 8-13, for the ASAE Annual Meeting. This was a great opportunity to network with industry colleagues and potential clients.

Ann also attended the CVBREPS summer event in Alexandria, VA on August 19. The meeting was attended by more than 200 meeting professionals, and Visit Spokane gave away a basket of wine dressed as a lantern to showcase the upcoming Chinese Lantern Festival.

President & CEO Cheryl Kilday, along with Director of Communications & PR Tim Robinson, attended the Educational Seminar for Tourism Organizations in Portland, August 22-25. The annual ESTO presented great tools, tips and information about strategically marketing our destination.

Director of Sales Shannon Shannon and Director of National Accounts Sonja Hughes attended Connect Marketplace in Pittsburgh, August 27-29, with three of our industry partners. Together, the team had 69 appointments with meeting planners who have the potential to bring large scale groups to our region.

Partner Tip

As you probably already know, Visit Spokane works hard to bring multiple conventions to the Spokane region throughout the year. What you might not know is that as a partner of Visit Spokane, you can access our Convention Calendar to find out more information about each convention that is coming to the area.

Why would you care about this information? Most importantly, you can staff your business accordingly based on the number of additional people that will be in the region for the conference. Also, you might be able to connect with a group that aligns with your business (i.e. a fly fishing shop could connect with the International Federation of Fly Fishers).

You can access the Convention Calendar in the Partner Extranet by clicking on the "Convention Calendar" tab at the top of the screen. If you have issues accessing the calendar or would like more information, contact Brooklyn Gibson at bgibson@visitspokane.com.
