Spokane Expands Convention Options
Convention Center Expansion and Connected Hotel

Group-shot-grand-hotel-ball(SPOKANE, Wash. - Sept. 30, 2014) Two landmark Spokane projects were in the spotlight last week as the Visit Spokane staff toured the Spokane Convention Center expansion project and the new Grand Hotel Spokane, which is under construction.

"We see both of these projects as game-changers for our community and it's vital that we do our best to get the word out," said Cheryl Kilday, Visit Spokane President & CEO. "Our partners with the Convention Center and the new hotel did a great job of showing us the remarkable progress they're making on each project and what they'll look like when they're finished."

The Spokane Convention Center is undergoing a $55-million expansion, with the addition of 91,000 square feet of meeting space. This brings the Center's total exhibit space to 120,000-sf. Overall, the expansion will take the Convention Center past 500,000-sf. Construction is slated to be complete in January 2015.

The Grand Hotel Spokane is a 16-story, 716 room convention hotel located directly across the street from the Convention Center. The hotel, which will be Spokane's largest and the fifth-largest in the state of Washington, is owned by Walt and Karen Worthy, owners of the Davenport Hotel Collection of properties. When completed in early summer 2015, the Grand Hotel Spokane will feature 62,500-sf of meeting space, including an 18,000-sf ballroom. The property will be joining the Autograph Hotels Collection by Marriott later this year and will be connected via a skybridge to the Spokane Convention Center, making it the second connected hotel (after the DoubleTree by Hilton Spokane City Center).

"It was a "wow" moment to see the size of the Convention Center expansion and the new hotel," said Keith Backsen, Visit Spokane Vice President of Sales & Services. "We have known since the early planning stages that these projects will have a big impact for meeting planners. But to get to see them under see their size... really drives the point home about how important they are to our region."
