March Madness is back in the Inland Northwest! Spokane will host the 2013 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship - Spokane Regional March 30 and April 1 at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. My Lady Zags got booted out of the tournament by Iowa last weekend at the McCarthey Athletic Center, but I'm still excited to watch some fantastic basketball.
The last time the tournament was held in Spokane was 2011 and the Gonzaga women made a historic run. The #11-seeded Bulldogs became the lowest seed ever to make a regional final in the history of the women's tournament.
This year, of the No. 1 seeds Baylor, Connecticut, Stanford and Notre Dame, I think Stanford will be the team to watch. They have been down this road before, playing in Spokane in 2008 as a No. 2 seed and advancing to regional's and the Final Four for the first time since 1997. This year, Stanford is a No. 1 seed. The Cardinal's will be trying to make their fourth consecutive Final Four appearance in New Orleans and maybe the finals on April 9th.
As a long time season ticket holder, I am always looking forward to March especially when we know my ladies have a great chance to play at home. That is why their loss to Iowa on Saturday was tough as it's just not right to watch a game of basketball without my Lady Zags playing. Even so, the Spokane Arena is electric during the tournament and I couldn't be more excited to watch the teams playing this weekend.
