Spokane, also known as the Lilac City, lights up in May for the Spokane Lilac Festival. The blossoming buds on lilac trees not only brighten up the streets of Spokane with a lavender hue, they smell wonderful too! The big celebration takes place the third Saturday in May with the Armed Forces Torchlight Parade. But besides the parade, there are plenty of things to do in Spokane during the weeklong Lilac Festival.
Cruzin’ The Falls Car Show
On the day of the parade, see hot rods, classic cars and more all along Spokane Falls Blvd. The Cruzin’ the Falls Car Show is a car lover’s dream!
After perusing the cars, take a walk around Spokane’s Riverfront Park. Natural beauty, unique attractions and walking trails await you in the 100-acre park -- not to mention awesome views of the Spokane River. To see the river up close and personal, take a ride on the Spokane Falls SkyRide, which drops right over the country’s second largest urban waterfall, the Spokane Falls. Or, walk through Huntington Park (adjacent to Riverfront Park), a beautiful new park that takes you so close to the falls, you may want to wear a raincoat!
Armed Forces Torchlight Parade
The centerpiece attraction of the week, the annual Armed Forces Torchlight Parade is the largest of its kind in the nation! While most people line the streets of Spokane to wave at floats, enjoy local bands and more as they pass by, bleacher seating is also available. Located at the beginning of the parade on the corner of Washington and Spokane Falls Blvd, the bleachers give you prime viewing of the parade for just $15 a seat. If you choose to find your own spot along the sidewalk, make sure you get there early! The parade starts at 7:45pm, but prime viewing locations fill up quickly.
Don’t forget to grab a bite to eat before you settle in for the parade. Downtown Spokane has plenty of restaurants – from family-friendly to elegant upscale dining -- many within walking distance, if not right on, the parade route. Click here to find a full list of the Spokane region's restaurants.
