For those who dream of white Christmases and yearn to walk in winter wonderlands, Riverfront Park Ice Palace is the place to be. Each winter, skaters of all ages and abilities flock to the nationally recognized outdoor ice rink. Not only does the palace offer a healthy dose of the season’s magic, it offers it at an unbelievable price. Admission is $5 for adults with discounted $3.50 admission for youth, seniors and military. If you need skates, rentals are just $3.50. One of the great things about the Palace is its location in the heart of downtown Spokane. With that in mind, here are some nearby fun spots to complete your ice skating itinerary.
The Ice Palace isn’t the only attraction open in Riverfront Park during winter. Take a ride on the hand carved 1909 Looff Carrousel, test your short game at the Enchanted Forest Miniature Golf Course or glide over the river on the Spokane Falls SkyRide gondolas. For those looking for a cold weather reprieve, the IMAX Theatre offers movie magic on a five-story high screen.
Need a reward after your winter adventure? Within a few blocks of Riverfront Park, you’ll find a handful of local coffee shops that offer an array of toasty drinks, including the timeless classic, hot chocolate. Check out: Atticus Coffee & Gifts, Beautiful Grounds, Brews Bros. Espresso Lounge and Indaba Coffee Roaster.
If you work up an appetite skating, there are dozens of restaurants within walking distance. For the sake of this list, we picked a few great options and divided them into two categories: family friendly and date night. Obviously, there’s some overlap here. Kids and couples alike can find something to enjoy at each of these spots.
Rocky Rocco Pizza and Pasta: Every kid loves pizza. This deep dish establishment features big comfy booths and an epic salad bar.
O’Doherty’s Irish Grille: Yes, it’s a pub, but during the day it’s a true family establishment. Kids will go wild for the quirky décor.
Red Robin Gourmet Burgers: Keep it classic. Friendly service, good prices and a great burger -- Red Robin is a national family favorite for a reason.
Melting Pot of Spokane: Earn some major brownie points and relish in the Melting Pot’s decadent chocolate fondue creations. Dinner is available too.
The Blackbird Tavern + Kitchen: Southern cooking, locally sourced foods and an historic venue -- the Blackbird fires on all cylinders.
Clinkerdagger: A Spokane institution, Clinkerdagger offers fine dining (seafood, steak, prime rib, etc) and a stellar view of the river.
