President's Perspective

cheryl_mattedNovember is the time we often reflect on what we are thankful for.  Here in Spokane there are many reasons to be thankful.  We enjoy the scenic beauty of our surroundings, a diverse economy, a variety of visitor experiences to explore and a friendly community where people care about one another. Through my participation in professional associations, I have the privilege to hear how my colleagues around the country are challenged by their communities and elected officials who do not support tourism.  Here in Spokane and throughout our county, our communities value tourism.  What a difference that makes when we consider both challenges and opportunities facing our destination.

I am thankful for my co-workers and colleagues in the community who are passionate about the Spokane region and believe in the power of travel and the benefits resulting from visitor spending.  I am also thankful for the thoughtful perspective and oversight from our board of directors. I believe it makes me, and our organization, better.

My thanks to all of you who participate in, invest in, and support tourism initiatives here in Spokane County, as well as on the state, regional and national levels.  Sometimes we are so close to our situation that we fail to see our blessings.  Let's all take a moment, pause, and be thankful for what is truly Spokane. Near Nature. Near Perfect.

President & CEO

Greeting Visitors at a New Kiosk!

VIC-kioskHave you seen our new visitor information kiosk in River Park Square? We love it! Opened on November 1, the kiosk serves as a central location in downtown Spokane for visitors to seek information, pick up a map and visitor guide and speak with one of our knowledgeable volunteers about all the great things to do in the Spokane region.

Inland NW ACE Team

Become a member of Visit Spokane's hospitality training program, the Inland NW ACE Team!  ACE Team members attend a four hour class, two hours of which are dedicated to in-class training. The final two hours are more experiential and will take you on a guided tour to see the Spokane area through the eyes of a visitor. Watch for class openings here or email Gina Campbell at

Where in the World

Did You Know?

The Spokane region gets some great props in the current issue of DRAFT Magazine, the nation's biggest beer-centric publication. Part of the process included input from Visit Spokane. Here's a quick Q&A to give you insight into what we do - something for all of us to keep in mind for future opportunities.

Q: Why did DRAFT call you?
A: To get info for an article they were working on about the Spokane craft beer scene. DRAFT interviewed us and we suggested several topics to focus on. We also hired a photographer to provide DRAFT with photos.

Q: How did you decide what to focus on?
A: Simple - whatever visitors would love, we shared with DRAFT. Not only did they produce a great two-page article, we established a rapport with the magazine's editor for future opportunities!

Q: What's the takeaway for Visit Spokane members?
A: Keep us in the loop! If you have news, let us know, and we'll do whatever we can to get the word out!
