Spokane Makes Top Ten for Best American Riverfront
Spokane River gives city national recognition

The votes have been tallied and Spokane has been chosen as the second-best riverfront city in the United States. The national contest, officially called the " USA Today 10Best Readers' Choice contest for Best American Riverfront," put Spokane just behind Wilmington, N.C. when the final tally came in.

This is hardly the first time Spokane has taken the national stage thanks to the roaring Spokane River, which travels directly through the middle of the city.
  • The Spokane River falls have the second-longest vertical drop among all rivers in the U.S.
  • The Spokane Falls SkyRide has twice been named one of the world's 15 best gondola rides, most recently in 2013.
  • In October 2014, Spokane was nominated to be included in a list of the 20 best riverfront cities in the U.S. by USA Today and
"This is a great honor, especially given the other cities that were in the running," said Cheryl Kilday, Visit Spokane President & CEO. "We've known for a long time that our riverfront is spectacular, and this is another step to sharing that story with the rest of the country."

The Spokane River travels through the city's Riverfront Park, a 100-acre park featuring green space, attractions and waterfront paths. The city is also underway with a master plan for Riverfront Park that will further enhance the city's riverfront. In addition to the park, other public-access features along the river bank allow visitors and locals the opportunity for unparalleled river experiences. The Spokane Convention Center, currently undergoing a $55 million expansion, is being remodeled to take full advantage of its riverfront location, and the recently completed Spokane City Hall Plaza, and adjacent Huntington Park, both afford amazing, up-close access to the river and the falls.

"It was great to see the way the community came together to vote for our river," said Kilday.

Once USA Today sent the surprise announcement that Spokane made the top 20 nominees, a community-wide effort ensued, with t.v. stations, radio stations, websites and newspapers all encouraging people to vote. While the voting was open to anyone, there was a one-vote-a-day limit during the two-week polling period.
