Spokane, the Name, Continues to Intrigue

Once again, the hub of the Inland Northwest has gained notoriety simply because of its name.

British Airways has included Spokane in a list of "Seven U.S. Cities With Weird Names (And Why You Should Visit)." In fact, Spokane finds itself at No. 1 on the list.

This latest tip-of-the-how-you-say-it-hat is in the April edition of British Airways' monthly online publication, "The Club," the airline's digital magazine for its mileage plan members.

Spokane has been included on "name lists" before -- most recently as the No. 1 city in the U.S. with the most often mispronounced name ( However, this time, the focus isn't so much about saying "Spokane" incorrectly as it is the assets of the region.

"The city's slogan, Near Nature, Near Perfect, may draw eye rolls from self-effacing locals," the article states, "but the fact remains that in just 15 minutes, you can get from whitewater to wood-fired pizza, bike trails to cocktails and climbing rocks to concerts."

While we don't necessarily agree with the eye-rolling assertion (about the slogan created by Visit Spokane!), we couldn't more heartily agree with everything else in the piece, including its putting Spokane, once more, at the top of the list!
