World Science Fiction Convention "Sasquan" Comes to Town
Approximately 5,000 attendees from around the globe will visit for Sasquan

(August 17, 2015) The 73rd World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon), also known as Sasquan, will be held in Spokane on August 19-23, 2015.

Sasquan will feature a variety of programs including panels, presentations, readings, autograph sessions, special guests, writers' workshops and dances.

Some of this year's special guests and speakers include "Game of Thrones" author George R. R. Martin, illustrator Brad W. Foster and script writer David Gerrold.

In addition, the Hugo Awards, the leading award for excellence in the field of science fiction and fantasy, will be presented at Sasquan. The Hugo Awards recognize books, film, television, podcasts and fan works. These categories are voted on by members of Worldcon and are decided at the conference.

There are 5,000 projected attendees coming from all around the globe, ranging from Singapore to Norway. Of the international travelers, most are from the United Kingdom and Australia.

"The recent expansion of the Spokane Convention Center and the additions to downtown have really helped bring an international convention of this size to our region," said Amy Cabe, Visit Spokane Director of Convention Services. "Last year's Worldcon was in London, so it's great for Spokane to be placed on the map as the 2015 host."

The public is welcome to join some of the events during the convention, including a "mini First Night," which will take place on Wednesday, August 19 at 4pm in Riverfront Park. The remaining convention events require a membership in Sasquan, which must be purchased at the Convention Center (day passes are available). Specific details on which events are open to the public can be found on the Sasquan website.

"It is wonderful to have international, national and regional visitors coming to Spokane for this event," said Cheryl Kilday, Visit Spokane President & CEO. "Our city has a lot to offer with its restaurants, hotels and various activities. We hope that the members of Worldcon-Sasquan enjoy their stay."
