Featured in June is a collection of small works in various media by members of the Avenue West Gallery co-op. The gallery also hosts an exhibit of oils by guest Aaron Smith. The artist’s reception is First Friday, June 7, from 5 to 8 pm at Avenue West Gallery, 907 W Boone, Suite C.

“small things II”, works by Gallery members small in size or focus, returns this summer in a new iteration. Members exhibiting include, Elise Bozzo, Jim Bauer, Ladd Bjorneby, Katie Densley, Cheryl Halverson, Darlene Lemiuex , Marsha Marcuson, Jerry Mudge, Nancy Rothwell, Pat Schilling, Elizabeth Scott, Carol Schmauder, Lori Scott, Graham Silcher, and Keiko Von Holt.

Aaron Smith drew as a young man but abandoned the idea of ever doing anything with this talent because it seemed that computer painting programs and digital art were making artists obsolete. In the meantime, he studied Kung Fu. But the creative urge was not to be denied and much later he bought cheap oils and tried again. He says “I was awful, truly terrible! But the principles and experience I have learned from Kung Fu are now instilled deeply in me. What is Kung Fu? Pressure and time, it is diligent practice beyond the point of your comfort level. Now I apply the practice of Kung Fu to my art”
