Beaches a Short Drive from Downtown Spokane
Round everyone up and pack a picnic basket for some family fun at Liberty Lake. The swimming beach, staffed by lifeguards, is part of a 3,591-acre park that's only a half-hour drive from downtown Spokane. Practice your backstroke for a while or just lounge on the beach with a good book.
Spread out your blanket and soak up some rays at Coeur d'Alene City Park Beach. Coeur d'Alene Lake is the second largest lake in northern Idaho, so you know there's no shortage of shoreline with great swimming spots. Don't forget good walking shoes, though. The best beaches are found on a hike around Tubbs Hill.
Looking for some swimming without the wake and rumble caused by motorboats? Head for Fish Lake in Cheney. Motorized boats are prohibited so you can find some peace and safe swimming (warning: no lifeguards on duty!). Take a break in between strokes and play some hoops on the basketball court.
If best-kept secrets are more your style, you want to look up Boulder Beach Park. Nestled on the banks of the Spokane River in Spokane Valley, it's where the locals head for a dip on hot summer days. You can bring your dogs, too, to join in the fun.
Q'emiln Park in Post Falls for another spot tucked away on the Spokane River. The sandy spot is shielded from the current, making for a great place to teach the kids to swim. It's part of a 78.5-acre park where you can picnic or play horseshoes and volleyball. Q’emiln Park does not allow dogs, so they’ll have to sit this one out.
Day Trip Swimming Beaches
Some great beaches are farther afield, but worth a day trip into the wild.
Beaver Bay Beach is just one of the awesome stretches of sand on Lake Pend Oreille in Farragut State Park. It's a mecca for swimmers and floaters, since the swimming area is roped off from motorboats and personal watercraft.
Fort Spokane is well known for history museum, but you could opt for giving your brain a break and sitting on the beach all day. It sits on Lake Roosevelt, a waterway controlled by the Grand Coulee Dam.
