Hillyard Historic Business District

While the University District is Spokane's youngest neighborhood, Hillyard Historic Business District is its oldest. The district is on the Spokane and National Historic Registers. Hillyard, a working-class neighborhood, was established and platted in 1892 as the Great Northern Railroad began to lay track in the Pacific Northwest. The buildings went up between 1901 and 1948, making for some cool architecture now filled with pubs, shops, and entertainment.

Eat & Drink

For locals, Hillyard is always a prime destination for shopping and antiques. Fuel up at Barnwood Social Kitchen & Tavern. This family-friendly restaurant serves up a dish called the Monster Mac. If you order it, don't plan on eating for the rest of the day. It's a cheeseburger smothered with bacon, three types of cheese. Deep-fried mac 'n cheese creates the buns. For delicious barbecue, Dogtown Taphouse & BBQ is a favorite for brisket and ribs. Try Red Dragon Chinese for some Kung Pao Chicken. If you're searching for a place to rest whilst enjoying a beer, try Northern Rail Pub.

Play

Market Street, the main drag through Hillyard, lives up to its name. If antiquing is your thing, you'll find a plethora of opportunities. Hillyard Variety, Vintage Mercantile & Auction, and B&B Junk Co. are the right places to start. Market Street Antiques is also packed with decades of stuff to look through and employs a few cats, as well. Try skateboarding at the Hillyard Skate Park, golf at Esmeralda, and take a quick hike at nearby Beacon Hill.

The annual Hillyard Festival, complete with a parade, food, and music, is always a local favorite.
