University District

Spokane’s University District is a mix of rich history, innovation and entrepreneurship. The area east of downtown Spokane was once home to only Gonzaga University’s campus. As its enrollment grew rapidly in the late 1990s, Washington State University recognized the opportunity to offer programs in Spokane and purchased adjoining parcels of land. Now, the area is home to six universities, two medical schools, and innovation centers like the Catalyst Building. It’s an energetic, highly intelligent, hip place to be, and it keeps on growing.

The University District campuses are surrounded by food & drink options. The iconic Jack & Dan’s college bar, once owned by the father of Gonzaga legend and former NBA star John Stockton, is a great place to start. If it's game day, be sure to get in line early! One of Spokane’s most prolific craft breweries, No-Li Brewhouse, is in the area as well. They host incredible watch parties and seasonal events, and their patio has been ranked among the top 10 in the United States for multiple years.

To fit in with the college kids, make a stop at the Zag Shop on the Gonzaga campus or The Bookie, Washington State University’s bookstore, for some swag. Global Neighborhood Thrift isn’t about recycled clothing and furniture; its goal is to heal the world and save the planet. The employees came to Spokane as refugees, so it’s a starting point for newcomers trying to build their American dream.

For entertainment, you’ll find it with Gonzaga athletics. The school has an incredible baseball team and facility, plus the soccer teams, and don’t forget basketball. The Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center features theater, ballet, dance and music, and the Bing Crosby Museum is housed in the famous crooner's childhood home.
