Inland Northwest Rail Museum
The Inland Northwest Rail Museum was founded as a nonprofit over 50 years ago in Spokane and spent 40 of those years based at the Spokane Interstate Fairgrounds. Originally open only during the Interstate Fair in September, in 2002 the organization choose a new location on 30 acres adjacent to State Hwy 2 at the junction of Hwy 231 S; 12 miles west of Fairchild AFB.
Developing a new museum and moving a collection of their size was a monumental project. Beginning with development of the property, volunteers laid track from the original Northern Pacific Railroad line adjacent to the property to display tracks throughout the property to house over 30 rail cars and locomotives in their collection.
The museum and restoration center opened in 2016 with displays and rolling stock from Eastern Washington, Northern Idaho and Western Montana. Having filled the building, displays now spill over into a museum train that tells the history of the area. A hands-on museum, you can walk through restored train cars including the last existing Spokane Streetcar. Voted among the top two museums in the area, its open year around to all visitors including special groups, schools and birthday parties. Check their website for seasonal hours and special events. www.inlandnwrailmuseum.com
